“Our management console displays real-time procurement data from the CA DGS database, which is a database of all the certified small businesses, microbusinesses, women-owned businesses, all the DVBE businesses.”
Problem
California State Universities are struggling to meet the 25% supplier diversity goal for procuring from small and disabled veteran businesses. Their current diverse spending is only 19%, lagging behind other universities like Old Dominion (46%) and George Mason (37%). Additionally, tracking and reporting purchases from diverse suppliers is a manual, time-consuming process that can take weeks.
Technical Solution
The team developed a vendor management console with an integrated AI-powered chatbot. The console displays real-time procurement data from the CA DGS database of certified small, micro, women-owned, and disabled veteran businesses. The chatbot, built with AWS Lambda and Amazon Lex, recommends alternative small businesses to replace larger vendors, helping meet the 25% diversity goal. The solution automates the tracking and reporting process.
