“CSU Safe serves to provide comprehensive coverage for students and faculty, giving them the training they need, reducing risk of injury, and just providing a safer learning environment for everyone.”

Problem

The current Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) training systems in the California State University (CSU) system are too generic and fail to address the specific hazards present in laboratories, workshops, and fieldwork environments. Without targeted training, students and staff miss critical safety information relevant to their actual work, leading to a high rate of accidents and injuries. A study found that 45% of academic lab participants experienced an injury while working.

Technical Solution

CSU Safe is an AI-powered platform that provides personalized EHS training recommendations based on the specific courses and hazards associated with a student or faculty member’s work. It features a user-friendly interface where users can select their courses, and an intelligent recommendation system powered by a large language model (LLM) generates a tailored list of relevant EHS training modules. This targeted approach ensures that students and staff receive the safety training they need, reducing the risk of accidents and creating a safer learning environment.
