“Every student deserves to be seen and understood regardless of how they learn. So, with AI, we’re now implementing all these techniques, and we are making education accessible for everyone.”
Problem
The existing tutoring system at the De Anza and Foothill College District does not cater to the diverse learning needs of students, particularly those with disabilities. The current matching process for students and tutors is based solely on the subject matter, without considering the individual learning styles or disabilities of the students. Additionally, support for students drops when they need it the most, such as during off-hours or when tutors are unavailable. Furthermore, tutors, while subject matter experts, may lack specialized training to accommodate students with disabilities effectively.
Technical Solution
The team developed a solution called “Owl & Lion Access” (named after the De Anza and Foothill College District) that aims to make tutoring accessible for all students, regardless of their learning preferences or disabilities. The solution includes two portals: one for students and one for tutors. The student portal allows students to register their learning preferences, disabilities, and availability, while also providing a chatbot to answer questions specific to their course material. The tutor portal displays the student’s learning needs and preferences, and automatically generates a personalized lesson plan based on the course material. The solution also includes a dyslexia-friendly view and integrates Amazon Lex with a knowledge base to assist tutors in accommodating students with special needs.
